Week One Question

My question this week is: “What is your expectations of and for the Black community? Do you have any at all?” Please respond regardless of if you have an opinion or if you don't.

Introduction

Hi,

My name is Kenyatta, and I want to open up a dialogue with Black America. I mean a real dialogue with real folks.

I am not a civil rights activist nor a preacher. I am not looking for fame or notoriety. I simply want to help improve the state of the Black community in America.

I started to become socially conscious in this regard about two or three years ago. The drive for change has only become stronger since then, but it seems like there is this disconnect between those of us who see the need for change and are actively working to accomplish it, and those who need help, direction and guidance the most. It seems to me, however, that a lot of those who are pushing for (especially on the national level) are mostly preaching to the converted. While I’m sure that this is not their goal (although even the converted need the messages reinforced), it can explain why there have been nominal gains in education and wealth in the Black community in the 40-odd years since the civil rights movement.

I don’t want to speculate as to why this disconnect exists. I can be debated, but the only way to actually discover the reason is to get it straight from the horse’s mouth. This is where you all come in.

Every week I will ask a question or present a topic that I think will help move us in the right direction toward both dissolving this disconnect between those who can help and those who need help. I need everyone who reads this who is also of the Black community to share with me their answers and views, as well as those of friends, relatives and acquaintances who may not have access to the internet (hopefully soon I’ll be able to give a P.O. box for folks to write to).

I don’t care where you’re from, where you are, what your level of education is or how much money you make…I want to hear from you!

Thanks, and God bless!

Kenyatta
